Hurting religious sentiment: ex-JnU student gets 5 years’ jail

Jagannath University, May 13 - A Dhaka tribunal on Monday sentenced Tithi Sarkar, a suspended student of Jagannath University (JnU), to 5 years imprisonment in a case filed under the Digital Security Act (DSA) case for making derogatory comments about religion on social media.

Dhaka's Cyber Tribunal Judge AM Zulfikar Hayat announced the verdict, bench assistant of the tribunal Jewel Mia said.

Earlier on November 5, 2020, Abu Musa Rifat filed the case at Dhaka Cyber Tribunal against her.

According to the case statement, Tithi Sarkar was a student of the Zoology Department of Jagannath University from October 16, 2020 to October 23, 2020.

She made derogatory comments on Islam on Facebook which hurt religious sentiments, it said.

Tithi Sarkar was the office secretary of Jagannath University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Adhikar Parishad. She was also expelled from the organization for hurting religious sentiments.

Meanwhile, general students staged demonstrations on the campus for several days demanding her expulsion in 2020. Then on October 26, 2020, Tithi was expelled from the university.-UNB
