Six to die, 10 get life-term in Cumilla Nurul Haque murder case

A Cumilla court has sentenced six people to death and 10 others to life term imprisonment for murder of an arbitrator.

The convicts are- Masum 35, Tajul Islam 32, Mostafa 24, Kaiyum 25, Kaiyum 28 and Tabdul Hossain, 40, while the life-term sentenced convicts are Nanu Mia 40, Matin Mia 40, Saidul Islam 24, Babul Mia 25, Safiqul Islam 35, Safiqul Islam 28, Moslem Mia 45, Helal Mia 25, Billal Hossain 30 and Abdul Awal, 30.

Judge Md Zahangir Hossain of Cumilla District and Sessions Judge Court-4 pronounced the verdict on Wednesday afternoon, Public Prosecutor Mohammad Zakir Hossain told the media. The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each.

However, two accused- Hiran Mia and Monirul Islam were acquitted of the charges as they were not proved guilty.

The court sources said Nurul Haque, an arbitrator, was murdered in Chhoto Dushia area in Brahmanpara upazila on February 16, 2011, for not delivering the verdict in favour of a party. - Special Correspondent
