A Dhaka court has placed former inspectors general of police (IGPs) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and AKM Shahidul Hoque on different remand terms in connection with two separate murder cases.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Akteruzzaman issued the orders, according to a court sub-inspector.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was remanded for eight days following a 10-day remand request in a case concerning the death of grocery shop owner Abu Saeed in Mohammadpur on July 19. The murder case was filed by SM Ameer Hamza Shatil of Mohammadpur on August 13 against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and six others.

AKM Shahidul Hoque was remanded for seven days, also following a 10-day remand request, in a case related to the death of 45-year-old trader Abdul Wadud. Wadud was killed in Dhaka’s New Market area on July 19 during the quota reform protests. Abdur Rahman, Wadud’s brother-in-law, lodged the case on August 21, naming Sheikh Hasina and 129 others.

Police apprehended both former police chiefs in the early hours of today from Uttara. They were wanted in multiple cases, including those related to murder charges.

Shahidul Hoque served as IGP from December 2014 to January 2018, while Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun held the position from September 2022 until his resignation on August 5 this year, the same day Sheikh Hasina resigned amidst a mass uprising.

In a separate development, Abdullahel Kafi, an additional superintendent of police in Dhaka, was placed on an eight-day remand in a case filed at Hazaribagh Police Station for the alleged abduction of Engineer Arif Mynuddin in 2019.
