A Dhaka court today ordered Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mashiur Rahman to a seven-day remand for questioning in connection with the murder of 14-year-old Abdul Motaleb, who was killed during the quota reform protests in Dhanmondi on August 4.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury issued the remand after Investigation Officer Nazrul Islam, an inspector from the Detective Branch of Police, presented him in court with a request for a 10-day remand. Mashiur was formally arrested in this case following the IO's application.

In his remand request, the IO claimed that Mashiur Rahman was one of the masterminds behind the killing and emphasized the need for further interrogation to uncover the identities of other individuals involved.

The defense team sought bail and argued against the remand, asserting that Mashiur was being unfairly targeted for harassment. However, the court rejected their pleas and ordered the remand for further questioning regarding the murder.

The victim's father, Abdul Matin, reported that his son was participating in the protest when he was shot. Matin subsequently filed a case on August 26 against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 175 others.

Earlier today, Mashiur was also presented in court after completing a separate seven-day remand related to the death of 45-year-old trader Abdul Wadud, who was killed during protests in the New Market area on July 19. A murder case in that instance was filed by Wadud's brother-in-law, Abdur Rahman, against Sheikh Hasina and 129 others on August 21.

Mashiur, previously the deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Lalbagh division, was arrested on September 19 at Dhaka Airport.
