The High Court has granted an additional six months to the high-level taskforce investigating the 2012 murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi. The decision was made on Tuesday during a hearing of an appeal filed by the state regarding the submission of the investigation report.

The two-member bench, comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi, passed the order after reviewing the state’s request for more time. The taskforce, which was formed on 30 September of the previous year, includes experienced personnel from various agencies.

In its earlier ruling, the High Court had directed the formation of the taskforce and instructed that the investigation report be submitted within six months. However, with that deadline now passed, the state requested a nine-month extension, citing progress in the investigation.

After considering the plea, the court granted an additional six months and scheduled the next hearing for 22 October.

Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi were tragically murdered in their rented home in the Paschim Razabazar area of the capital on 11 February 2012. The case was filed by Runi’s brother, Nausher Alam, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
