SC to Deliver Verdict on Jamaat’s Registration Appeal on June 1

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has set June 1 for delivering its verdict on Jamaat-e-Islami’s appeal seeking the restoration of its registration as a political party.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, fixed the date on Wednesday after concluding hearings on legal arguments from both sides.

Senior Advocate Ehsan Siddique and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir represented Jamaat in the case.

Earlier, on October 22, 2024, the Appellate Division revived Jamaat’s previously dismissed appeal, which challenged a 2013 High Court verdict declaring the party’s registration illegal. The High Court’s decision followed a writ petition challenging the legality of Jamaat’s registration.

Subsequently, on December 7, 2018, the Election Commission issued a gazette notification officially cancelling Jamaat’s registration.

In November 2023, the Appellate Division had dismissed Jamaat’s appeal due to the absence of its lead counsel, thereby upholding the High Court’s ruling.

Meanwhile, on August 1, 2024, the then Awami League-led government banned Jamaat-e-Islami, its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir, and affiliated organisations under Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act. However, the ban was later revoked on August 28 through a separate gazette notification.
