A Dhaka court has ordered the detention of former law minister Anisul Huq and former adviser to the ousted prime minister, Salman F Rahman, in connection with the murder of Sajedur Rahman Omar during last year’s July mass uprising.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan issued the order after the duo was produced in court upon completion of a two-day police remand. Investigators requested that they remain in custody until the investigation is concluded.

Earlier, on July 23, Magistrate Mahbub Alam had granted police a two-day remand for the two high-profile suspects.

According to case details, Sajedur Rahman Omar took part in an anti-discrimination student protest near Kajla Bridge in Jatrabari on July 21, 2023. He was shot in the head during the rally and died the following day.

The case was formally filed at Jatrabari Police Station on January 3, 2024, accusing 79 individuals, including the former prime minister.

Anisul Huq and Salman F Rahman were arrested on August 13 in Sadarghat while allegedly attempting to flee the capital via river routes.
