Speakers at a function here on Monday stressed the need for creating much awareness among the common people to check child marriage to build a better society.“Incident of child marriage are still happening in the society before the age of 18 creating alarming for the nation although Marriage Acts disallows marriage before the legal age of 18 for girls”, they said.They made the comments while addressing an awareness meeting on ‘Prevention of Child Marriage” organized by Sadar upazila administration at Shwadhinata Razat Jayanti Girls’ High School of the town here.Whip of the Bangladesh Parliament and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini addressed the function as the chief guest while deputy commissioner M. Ehsan-e-Elahi and panel mayor of Gaibandha municipality Mostaque Ahmed Ranzu were present as the special guests.With UNO Ashraful Momin Khan in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by medical of Gaibandha Sadar Hospital Dr. Shamima Khatun, chairman of school managing committee Rezaul Karim, head teacher FM Shamsunnahar, journalist Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman, and marriage registrar Abdul Goffar.After getting married the adolescent girls become mothers for which they face various health complications including malnutrition and even die during the delivery due to severe bleeding infections, obstructed labour and consequence of unsafe abortion, the speakers said.Whip Mahabub Ara Begum in her speeches said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took safe motherhood programme aimed at reducing maternal mortality rate at 143 from 193 in 100,000 to achieve millennium development goals by 2015.Terming child marriage and early pregnancy as the vital causes of maternal death, the whip laid emphasis on creating mass awareness through conducting different publicity programems to root out child marriage for ever from the society.Earlier, Dr. Shamima Khatun briefed elaborately about the reproductive health and hygiene for the students of the school and asked the adolescents to remain neat and clean during their ministration period to avoid from different diseases.All the students, teachers, guardians, SMC members and invited guests including journalists of print and electronic media attended the function.
