NOTTINGHAM, United Kingdom - India were bowled out for 278 in reply to England's first innings 183, a lead of 95 runs, on the third day of the first Test at Trent Bridge on Friday.
Opening batsman KL Rahul, dropped twice in the slips, marked his return to Test cricket after an absence of nearly two years by top-scoring with 84, while Ravindra Jadeja's typically dashing 56 featured eight fours and a six.
Ollie Robinson, playing just his second Test after being suspended following the re-emergence of racist and sexist tweets on his England debut against New Zealand at Lord's on June, took 5-86 in 26.5 overs -- his maiden five-wicket haul at this level.
England great James Anderson's figures of 4-54 in 23 overs took him to 621 Test wickets, with only two retired spinners in Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Australia's Shane Warne (708) now ahead of him in the all-time list.
India were 245-9 when Mohammed Shami was out but, with neither Anderson nor fellow veteran paceman Stuart Broad given the new ball immediately by England captain Joe Root, the last-wicket duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj hit out.
Bumrah smashed left-armer Sam Curran for 14 runs in three consecutive balls -- a clip through midwicket for four followed by a fine pull for six and an edged four over the slips.
He was last man out for a Test-best 28 when well caught by Broad, running round from fine leg, off Robinson.
But with more than 50 overs remaining Friday, there was time left in the day's play for England's fallible top order to suffer a second collapse this match.
England were without Ben Stokes after it was announced Friday that the star all-rounder would be taking an indefinite break from cricket to "prioritise his mental health".
This is the first of a five-match campaign, with India, who won 3-1 at home to England earlier this year, looking for only their fourth Test series victory on English soil following their 1971, 1986 and 2007 triumphs.BSS/AFP
