The Bangladesh women's national cricket team achieved their largest-ever ODI victory by runs, defeating Ireland by an emphatic 154-run margin in the first match of a three-game series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday.

Bangladesh posted their highest ODI total, 252/4, and then bowled out Ireland for a mere 98 in 28.5 overs, showcasing a dominant all-round performance. This victory surpassed their previous best—a 119-run win against South Africa last year, where they had set their earlier highest total of 250/3.

Early Breakthroughs Set the Tone
Pacer Marufa Akter spearheaded Bangladesh's bowling attack, delivering a game-changing third over by removing Ireland captain Gaby Lewis (5) and Amy Hunter (0) in successive deliveries. Although she narrowly missed a hat-trick, Marufa’s double strike rattled Ireland's top order.

Sultana Khatun and Nahida Akter then tightened the screws, claiming three wickets apiece, while Marufa finished with two. Ireland’s batting line-up collapsed under the pressure, with only Sarah Forbes (25) and Laura Delany (22) offering brief resistance.

Sharmin Akhter Stars with the Bat
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh opted to bat first and were powered by a career-best knock from Sharmin Akhter. Returning to the international stage after a break since July 2023, Sharmin delivered a scintillating 96 off 89 balls, featuring 14 boundaries. Despite falling short of her maiden century, caught at mid-off in the penultimate over, her innings set the foundation for Bangladesh’s record total.

Sharmin was well-supported by opener Fargana Hoque, who scored a patient 61 off 110 balls. The pair added a crucial 59-run opening partnership, and Murshida Khatun’s steady 38 off 61 further bolstered the innings. The middle-order contributions ensured a formidable score that proved too much for Ireland.

A Memorable Milestone
This commanding win not only highlighted Bangladesh's growing prowess in women's cricket but also reinforced their ability to deliver under pressure. With two games left in the series, the Tigresses will aim to carry this momentum forward, while Ireland will need a remarkable turnaround to stay in contention.
