Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in all competitions organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after his bowling action was deemed illegal during independent testing at Loughborough University earlier this month, according to a cricket-based platform.

The suspension follows a call by umpires in September, who questioned Shakib's action during his one-off appearance for Surrey in the County Championship. In that match, Shakib claimed nine wickets in Taunton, marking his first county cricket appearance since the 2010-11 season.

To lift the suspension, Shakib will need to pass a re-assessment of his bowling action. Specifically, his elbow extension must be below the 15-degree threshold set by the regulations. This reassessment is a key step for Shakib to return to bowling in ECB events.

The suspension officially began on December 10, the date the ECB received the results of the Loughborough testing.

Shakib’s career has recently been overshadowed by controversy. As a Member of Parliament in the now-overturned Awami League government in Bangladesh, his involvement in the political turmoil surrounding the tragic protests of July and August, which resulted in the deaths of several hundred civilians, has drawn significant attention. Amid this unrest, Shakib chose to retire from T20Is and later withdrew from traveling to Bangladesh for his farewell Test in October, citing the political climate in Dhaka.

Since then, Shakib has not participated in international cricket. He currently resides in the United States with his family, with no clear return to the sport on the horizon.
