Shakib’s bowling action was first reported by on-field umpires during his stint with Surrey County Cricket Club in September last year. Following the report, Shakib underwent two independent assessments—one in England and the second in India. However, both tests found his action to be illegal.
In a statement today, the BCB confirmed that Shakib’s suspension from bowling in competitions under the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) would continue, following the outcome of a recent re-assessment at the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science in Chennai.
The BCB also reaffirmed that the suspension, which was originally imposed after an independent assessment at Loughborough University in the UK, remains in place.
However, the board clarified that Shakib is still eligible to play as a batsman in both international and domestic cricket, pending a successful reassessment of his bowling action.
"A successful reassessment is required for the bowling suspension to be lifted. While Shakib is currently unable to bowl, he is eligible to continue playing as a batsman in all forms of domestic and international cricket," the release stated.
The BCB also mentioned that no further comments will be made on the matter at this time.
With the upcoming Champions Trophy just around the corner, Shakib’s chances of making it into the Bangladesh squad are now uncertain. The all-rounder, who has expressed intentions to retire after the Champions Trophy, will likely face challenges in his bid to feature as a key player in the tournament.
