Chattogram, 17 Jan —The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decided in principle to hold Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in February, shortly after the completion of the ongoing Men’s BPL.

It will be a one-off tournament, said BCB director Najmul Abedin Fahim as the board wants to see how it works.

“The board was thinking for some time that how we can take women's cricket forward. Keeping that in mind, there was a thought about whether a BPL for women could be held. Today we reached in a consensus that we’ll hold it,” Fahim said here today.

Initially the BCB is keen to launch the WBPL with three teams which will take on each other on double-league basis. The top two teams then will move to final directly. All of the matches will be held in Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium and one overseas player will be allowed.

''We will organize the Women's Bangladesh Premier League with three teams,” Fahim said, adding that the tournament will be held immediately after the completion of the BPL.

“We’ll complete the WBPL within eight/nine days. Each team will meet each other twice. We have already spoken to some franchises. They have shown interest. It will be a one-off tournament... We want to start and see what kind of effect it has if we bring this women's competition in the table. We hope it will take women's cricket another step forward.”BSS
