An unidentified man was shot to death by assailants in the New Market area of the capital on Tuesday evening.

The incident took place around 7:50pm in front of the Shaheed Shahnewaz Hostel near Dhaka University.

The victim, aged around 45, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after the gun attack, where doctors declared him dead.

A passerby, Mezbah, who took the victim to the hospital, said two unidentified attackers arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on the man in front of Gate No. 1 of the hostel.

“They shot him multiple times, including in the head, arm and under the armpit, before fleeing the scene,” he said.

The victim was found lying in a pool of blood and was rushed to the DMCH, where he was declared dead around 8:27pm, reports UNB.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said the man was brought to the hospital with bullet injuries from the New Market area.

“He was declared dead by the on-duty doctor. His identity could not be known immediately,” he said, adding that New Market Police Station has been informed.
