Dhaka Metropolitan Police acting commissioner Md Sarwar speaks to reporters after inaugurating a police camp in Karwan Bazar on 2 May, 2026.
There are currently no major “top criminals” active in the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) acting commissioner Md Sarwar has said, adding that any attempt to build new criminal networks will be stopped at an early stage.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after inaugurating a new police camp in Karwan Bazar on Friday (2 May).
Sarwar said law enforcement agencies are maintaining continuous surveillance to prevent the re-emergence of organised crime in Dhaka.
“We are continuing monitoring and surveillance. Anyone attempting to rise will be controlled before they can establish themselves,” he said.
He added that the list of identified top criminals in the capital is being regularly updated as part of ongoing crime control measures.
According to him, multiple units, including the Detective Branch (DB) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, are working together to ensure security in the Karwan Bazar area. The newly established police camp will operate around the clock to help curb extortion and other criminal activities.
He also said local traders will be able to report incidents confidentially or openly, and prompt action will be taken. Additional police forces will be deployed if required.
The DMP acting commissioner noted that special drives against extortion and drug-related offences are already underway across the capital, with several arrests made in recent operations. Surveillance has been increased in different parts of the city under the supervision of senior officers.
Responding to a question, he said citizens can contact assistant commissioners, deputy commissioners, or senior officials of the DMP crime division if police stations refuse to accept complaints or file cases.
He added that allegations against police personnel will also be investigated and addressed appropriately.
