A man allegedly hacked his distant niece to death before committing suicide in the Shrikhandia area of Ashulia on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Nazrul Islam, 47, son of Haji Madari Mondal, and Rekha Begum, 30.

According to locals, Nazrul attacked Rekha with a chapati in the afternoon, killing her on the spot. He then died by suicide, they said.

Police later recovered the bodies and sent those to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for autopsy.

Rekha was the mother of three children, while her husband, Russel Mia, has been living in Dubai for a long time, locals said.

Locals alleged that Nazrul and Rekha were involved in a romantic relationship, reports UNB.

Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tariqul Islam said both were local residents and relatives. “The matter is being investigated seriously,” he said.
