The deceased was identified as Monayem Hossain, 48, president of an AL ward unit and a ward member of Vayna Union Parishad.
Some criminals attacked Monayem, son of Abul Mondal of the same village, and hacked him while returning home from Moyenkhali Bazar around 9 pm, said witnesses.
He was initially taken to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead at around 10:30pm.
Police said one of his hands was almost severed from his body, while he sustained multiple deep wounds to his abdomen and other parts of the body.
Harinakundu Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masum Khan said the body was brought to the police station from the Kushtia hospital and would be sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Several police teams have launched drives identify and arrest those responsible for the killing, he said, adding that no written complaint has yet been filed by the victim’s family, reports UNB.
Monayem’s wife, Shilpi Khatun said, “Today I have become a widow and my children orphans. I want justice for this brutal killing.”
