The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has sought bank account information for 120 individuals and organisations over allegations that funds were used to finance garment workers' protests and create unrest in the country's readymade garment (RMG) sector.

The initiative aims to investigate whether money belonging to individuals and business groups, including Mondol, Envoy and Nipa groups, was used to fuel instability in the garment industry.

According to sources at the revenue board, owners of 12 business groups are suspected of financing sabotage-related activities during the labour unrest. The list reportedly includes Tipu Munshi, founder and managing director of Sipaul Group and a former commerce minister under the Awami League government.

Others whose bank accounts are reportedly being targeted include Salam Murshedy, managing director of Envoy Group and a former member of parliament; Shahriar Alam, owner of Renaissance Group and a former state minister for foreign affairs; and Nasrul Hamid Bipu, owner of Hamid Group and a former state minister for power and energy.

The list also includes Tajul Islam, founder of Fabian Group and a former local government minister; Faizur Rahman Badal, managing director of Tusuka Group; Abdus Salam, founder of Well Group; Khasru Chowdhury, managing director of Nipa Group; Zahid Ahmed Tulu, director of Axis Knitwears Limited; AKM Mosharraf Hossain, managing director of Standard Group; and Masuma Khatun Lipa, chairperson of Givency Group.

The bank accounts of former MP Ilias Uddin Mollah, former Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president and Dhaka North City Awami League General Secretary SM Mannan Kochi, and Sheikh Hasina's former personal assistant Jahangir Alam are also reportedly being targeted over allegations of financing protests in the Mirpur area.

The allegations are under scrutiny, and the individuals and organisations named have not been established as guilty of financing sabotage or unrest.
