A 71-year-old man was hacked to death allegedly by his drug-addicted son following an altercation over money at Boyra village under Lohagara upazila in Narail district on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Afsar Sheikh, son of late Hosen Sheikh of the village.

The accused son, Khairul Sheikh, 30, fled the scene immediately after the incident.

According to family members, Khairul had long been addicted to drugs, causing frequent familial disputes, which led his father to drive him out of the house recently. Khairul returned home three days ago after running out of money.

On Thursday around 1:00pm, Khairul demanded money from his mother. When Afsar intervened and asked his wife not to give him money, Khairul became enraged and repeatedly hacked his father with a sharp chopper (boti), killing him on the spot.

Officer-in-Charge Md. Shariful Islam of Lohagara Police Station, said the body was recovered and sent to Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Drives are underway to arrest the absconding son while a case is being processed, reports UNB.
