Police Inspector Mamun murder, brother testifies against Arav

Victim Police Inspector Mamun Imran Khan’s elder brother Zahangir Alam Khan testified on Monday against eight accused including Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan in the Mamun murder case.

First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Dhaka Atik Bin Kader recorded the depositions of witness Zahangir, who is also the complainant of the case. Later, the court fixed June 4 to record the depositions of other witnesses.

On Tuesday, the defense lawyers completed cross-examining complainant Zahangir.

Earlier, on July 28 of last year, Zahangir testified in the case. With recording his depositions the court completed recording one of the 38 witnesses.

Other accused people are-Rahmat Ullah, Swapon Sarker, Mizan Sheikh, Atik Hasan, Sarwar Hasan and Didar Pathan. On Tuesday they were produced in the court while two other accused Rabiul Islam alias Arab Khan and his wife Suraya Akter Keya are on the run. Fugitive Arav is known as a gold businessman of Dubai.

Meanwhile, lawyer Pervez said two other accused of the case are aged and they are on bail. Their names are Meherunnesa Sharna alias Afrin alias Annafee and Mosammat Faria Binte Mim. Their trial has been going on in the Juvenile Court on different charges.

Earlier, April 11 of 2019, Detective Branch (DB) of Police, pressed charges against Arav Khan, whose real name is Rabiul Islam alias Apon alias Shohag alias Hridoy and nine others in the murder case. The then Inspector of Special Brach of Police submitted the charge sheet.

On July 7, 2018, Police Inspector Mamun was killed in Banani area of the city. After three days of the murder, his brother Zahangir filed the murder case. 

Later, on March 31, 2019, Police submitted the charge sheet of the case, after investigation, accusing Rahmat Ullah, Rabiul Islam alias Apon alias Shohag alias Hridoy and seven others.

The court framed charges against the accused on November 25, 2021 and the trial of the case begun.

The charge says, accused Didar, Swapon, Rahmat Ullah called Police Inspector Mamun to residence no. 5 of Banani road 2 and his tied hands and legs. Later, accused Mizan, Atik and Sarwar joined the three accused. They were torturing Mamun inhumanly and at one stage Mamun became senseless. At about 10 pm accused Keya left the residence. In the same fashion Rabiul also left the house. In the morning they became sure that Mamun was dead.

They decided to hide the body. Rahmat Ullah said Mamun was a friend and if they did not hide the body all of them would be at risk.

Interpol accepted the request letter sent by Bangladesh Police to issue a red notice against Arav Khan alias Rabiul Islam, Dubai-based gold dealer.

Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun revealed the information at an event in Chattogram on Monday. - Special Correspondent
