A 54-year-old farmer, Azim Uddin Sarkar, was beaten to death on Tuesday night in Puthia village, Shahjadpur upazila, Sirajganj, after trying to stop a group of youths from smoking marijuana outside his home.

Sarkar, returning home, confronted the youths, but they reacted violently, attacking him before fleeing. Locals rushed to his aid and transported him to a nearby hospital, but he died from his injuries on the way.

An angry crowd found a motorcycle left by the attackers and informed the police. Officers later recovered the body and seized the motorcycle. The body was sent to Sirajganj Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

A case has been filed, and the investigation is ongoing, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aslam Ali of Shahjadpur Police Station.
