A 25-year-old Bangladeshi youth, Shahed Mia, was killed in an attack by Khasia smugglers near the Indian border in Kanaighat upazila, Sylhet. The incident occurred early Thursday morning, according to a press release from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) issued on Friday.

Shahed, the son of Mosahid Mia from Mangalpur village in Kanaighat, was reportedly involved in smuggling activities, according to local sources.

Lt. Col. Md. Nazmul Haque, commanding officer of BGB’s 48th Battalion, confirmed that the fatal attack was carried out by Khasia smugglers operating from India. Upon receiving information from local residents, the BGB contacted the Indian Border Security Force (BSF), who later provided a photograph of the deceased. Shahed’s family and local representatives were able to identify him from the image.

BGB officials stated that Shahed crossed into India around 3 a.m. on Thursday and was engaged in a confrontation with local smugglers. During the altercation, he was attacked and killed.

The process of repatriating his body is currently underway, with legal procedures being followed to bring Shahed’s remains back to Bangladesh, BGB officials confirmed.
