In separate overnight operations, members of the Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled goods worth approximately Tk 7.4 crore and arrested two individuals in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet.
According to a press release from the BGB, a team from the BGB-48 Sylhet Battalion, led by Deputy Commander Major Md. Nurul Huda, conducted a raid along the border areas and recovered Indian goods valued at around Tk 6 crore.
The confiscated items included Indian lehengas, various cosmetic and skincare products such as skin care creams, Roop G cream, and Pond's Bright Beauty face wash, along with Gillette blades, Fiama soap, sugar, KitKat chocolates, fuchka, dried fish (shutki), and betel leaves. A truck and a pickup van used to transport the items were also seized.
In a separate operation around 8:00 PM, a patrol team from the 27 Infantry Regiment (Bir Unit) of the Haripur Gasfield Army Camp raided Lama Fatehpur and Lafnaut villages under Alirgaon union. The army unit seized Indian cosmetics, Gillette blades, and lehengas worth over Tk 1.4 crore.
During the raid, two suspects—Hanif Ahmed, son of Abdul Latib from Lama Fatehpur village, and Juman Ahmed, son of Ahmed Ali from Narayanpur village—were arrested in connection with the smuggling.
Items recovered from the second operation included 213 pieces of Screen Sign cream, 280 pieces of Skin Bright cream, 160 pieces of Clop G cream, five cartons of Gillette blades, and 439 Indian lehengas.
Both the suspects and the confiscated items have been handed over to the BGB-48 Battalion for further legal action.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Nazmul Haque, Commander of BGB-48, said that operations will continue and that surveillance and intelligence activities along the border have been intensified to curb smuggling.
