A Union Parishad member was beaten to death by rivals in Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh district on Sunday night.

The deceased was identified as Jamal Uddin, 50, son of Shohor Ali of Nalchapra village in the upazila and a member of No 8 Ward of Banihala Union Parishad.

Quoting local people, police said Jamal had a longstanding enmity over  Jashim Uddin.

As a sequel to the enmity, a group of miscreants swooped on Jamal around 8 pm in front of Darus Sunnah Qawmi Madrasha when he was returning home and beat him up mercilessly, leaving him injured.

Later, he was taken to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 9 pm, reports UNB.

Additional Superintendent of Mymensingh Police Abdullah Al Mamun said  police detained two people—Kasim Uddin, 55 and Anwar Hossain, 45—for their suspected involvement in the killing.
