A local leader of Sramik League was gunned down by unidentified miscreants in Mollahat upazila on Saturday night.

The deceased is Sohag Sheikh, 40, general secretary of the Upazila Sramik League and son of Daud Ali Sheikh from Udaypur village in Mollahat Sadar.

Sources said he was returning home on a motorcycle after closing his shop when the attackers, who had been lying in wait, opened fire, leaving him dead on the spot.

Mollahat police station officer-in-charge Kazi Ramzanul Haque said  on March 7, assailants had shot one of Sheikh’s shop employees who is now receiving treatment in Dhaka in serious condition, reports UNB.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the killing could be linked to a business dispute or the previous attempt on the employee’s life, he said.

He added that police investigation is ongoing to uncover the exact cause and identify the perpetrators for arrest.
