Noted singer Pratul Mukhopadhyay passes away

Renowned Bangali singer and lyricist Pratul Mukhopadhyay passed away today at 83.


He passed away early Saturday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kolkata, according to media reports quoting his daughter in Kolkata said.

He was born in Barisal on June 25, 1942. His father Prabhat Chandra Mukhopadhyay was a school teacher who left Bangladesh with Pratul and his wife Bani Mukhopadhyay for Kolkata after partition.

Pratul, an unparalleled legacy in Bangali music, had been suffering from various health complications since the beginning of the year.

Pratul Mukhopadhyay was best known for his soul-stirring compositions, including 'Ami Banglar Gaan Gai' and 'Dinga Bhasao Sagore', 'Alu Becha', 'Chhokra Chand', 'Tomarki Kono Tulona Hoye', 'Seimayeti', 'Februarir Ekush Tarikh' songs that remain deeply etched in the hearts of his listeners.

His music will be remembered following his demise. The Bangali music society will also follow his songs. Pratul Mukhopadhyay's contributions to Bangali music remain invaluable and his passing marks the end of an era.

Fans and well-wishers are mourning the loss of an artiste whose melodies will continue to inspire generations to come.
