Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to expedite the opening of the long-awaited Third Terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, aiming to significantly boost passenger capacity and operational efficiency at the country’s main aviation gateway.

The directive came at a meeting held at the Cabinet Conference Room of the Secretariat, chaired by the Prime Minister, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam told reporters afterward.

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M. Rashiduzzaman Millat, and Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh Air Vice Marshal Md. Mostafa Mahmud Siddique, among others, attended the meeting.

The minister said the Prime Minister issued clear instructions to take all necessary steps to make the terminal operational at the earliest possible time. However, no specific inauguration date has been announced, as further technical assessments and consultations are needed to determine how the process can be accelerated.

Replying to questions about the delay despite more than 99 percent of the project being completed, she said the setback occurred during the tenure of the interim government, adding that the current administration is working to resolve outstanding issues.

Once-mighty  opened, the Third Terminal is expected to substantially expand annual passenger and cargo handling capacity and strengthen Dhaka’s position as a regional aviation hub.
