US Envoy Says Significant Progress Made In Bangladesh Ties

US President's special envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor has described discussions between Bangladesh and the United States as successful, saying significant progress has been made in strengthening bilateral ties.

"I was pleased to meet Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman during my first visit to Bangladesh and discuss working together to further strengthen US-Bangladesh bilateral relations. Significant positive progress has been made," Gor said in a post on X following his meeting with the foreign minister at State Guest House Padma in Dhaka on Thursday.

The two sides exchanged views on bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the discussions covered trade and investment, energy cooperation, defence and security, migration and the Rohingya crisis.

The foreign minister welcomed Gor on his first visit to Bangladesh and reaffirmed Dhaka's commitment to further strengthening its long-standing partnership with Washington based on mutual respect, democratic values, shared interests and people-to-people ties.

Following delegation-level talks after 6pm, Gor held a nearly 20-minute private meeting with Khalilur Rahman.

Gor arrived in Dhaka earlier in the afternoon for a three-day visit focused on bilateral relations, regional security, economic cooperation and the Rohingya crisis.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen welcomed Gor upon his arrival and expressed confidence that the visit would help further elevate relations between the two countries.

The latest discussions come as Bangladesh and the United States continue to explore cooperation in areas including energy security and broader economic engagement.
