Bangladesh seeks Bhutan’s support for SAARC revitalisation

Ambassador of Bhutan to Bangladesh Karma Hamu Dorjee called on the State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kabir on Wednesday 16 Sept 2026.

Dhaka, Sept 16 - Recalling the vision of late President Ziaur Rahman, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir on Wednesday requested Bhutan’s support for the revitalisation of SAARC for the collective benefit of the region and peoples.

He expressed Bangladesh’s keen interest to contribute to the development of Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) of Bhutan, particularly by providing professionals, skilled and semi-skilled human resources.

The issues were discussed when Ambassador of Bhutan to Bangladesh Karma Hamu Dorjee called on the State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was established with the signing of the SAARC Charter in Dhaka on 8 December 1985.

SAARC comprises of eight Member States: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Secretariat of the Association was set up in Kathmandu on 17 January 1987.

The Bhutanese Ambassador congratulated the State Minister on his appointment.

During the meeting, they discussed the bilateral issues of mutual interest.

The Bhutanese Ambassador conveyed the deep appreciation for the warm welcome extended to the King of Bhutan by the gracious presence of President of Bangladesh during his brief stopover at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka on 26 August 2026.

She also expressed her gratitude for the support of the Foreign Ministry in discharging her responsibilities. - UNB
