China Ready to Safeguard Iran’s Rights: Wang Yi

China is ready to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Iran and safeguard Tehran’s legitimate rights and interests, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday.

Wang made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, as tensions in the Middle East remain high.

He urged Iran and the United States to exercise restraint, return to the interim peace agreement reached in June and resume substantive consultations to ease tensions.

Wang also called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the importance of protecting global energy supplies and supply chains.

Araqchi, who was visiting Beijing at the head of an Iranian delegation, said Tehran was seeking to restore calm in the region and establish peaceful relations with neighbouring countries.

He reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to defend its sovereignty while expressing openness to diplomatic efforts that protect the rights of the Iranian people.

Wang said China supported rebuilding a negotiation framework based on previous agreements and believed the current Middle East security architecture needed to be improved.

Beijing has repeatedly called for respect for Iran’s sovereignty and legitimate rights while urging a diplomatic solution to the regional conflict.
