Iran’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi, has said Bangladesh must coordinate with Tehran and follow Iranian directives to ensure the safe passage of its ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking at a press conference at the Iranian Embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday, November 4, the ambassador said ships passing through the strategic waterway would need to comply with Iran’s instructions.

“No country will be able to safely transport fuel through this strategic waterway without coordination with the Iranian authorities,” he said. “Iran’s prescribed directives must be followed to pass through Hormuz.”

The ambassador said he was working to ensure the safe passage of fuel-carrying ships bound for Bangladesh.

Asked whether any Bangladeshi ship had already crossed the Strait of Hormuz, he said confidential information on the matter was available only to the officials concerned.

On the possibility of reopening the strait, Jahanabadi said Iran, Qatar and Oman had a plan. However, he said the withdrawal of the US naval blockade against Iran and assurances that no further attacks would take place were the two main conditions.

The ambassador also said Iran would support Rohingya Muslims if they took a stand against the United States and Israel.

Expressing doubt about the prospects for negotiations with Washington, he warned of the risk of a third world war and said Iran was prepared for any conflict.

He further warned that if Iran were subjected to a nuclear attack, the United States and Israel would receive an equal response.
