Dhaka Eyes Better Ties with Pakistan, Reflects on 1971
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain and others
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain stated today that while Bangladesh's interim government is open to improving bilateral relations with Pakistan, the memory of the 1971 Liberation War remains crucial.
"1971 is always in our hearts," Hossain said when asked whether the issue was discussed during the meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the UN General Assembly in New York.
During a media briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hossain characterized the meeting as a "courtesy visit." He noted, "We don’t address sensitive issues in informal settings. Those will be discussed in formal talks."
Hossain emphasized that Bangladesh is not willing to improve ties with Pakistan without addressing the events of 1971. "I believe relations could improve if the Pakistani government acknowledges what happened in 1971 and offers a sincere apology," he said, highlighting that Dhaka has yet to see any meaningful initiative from Islamabad regarding this matter.
