"It's a large-scale project. In 2023, we provided feedback to the Economic Relations Division (ERD), suggesting that the proposal be resubmitted in phases. However, two years have passed, and we have yet to receive a response," Yao Wen said during a media briefing at the Chinese Embassy.
The ambassador stressed the urgency of the Teesta project, emphasizing its importance for the livelihoods of the thousands of people living along the riverbanks.
"We are ready to work with the interim government, but Bangladesh must first provide the necessary feedback for us to begin support procedures," he added. "As a sovereign country, it's up to Bangladesh to decide on the project’s implementation. Whether it is done by China or Bangladesh, we just want it to begin as soon as possible to benefit the people."
Yao revealed that Bangladesh first requested Chinese assistance for the Teesta project in 2021, and after evaluation, China recommended revisions in 2023 due to unnecessary elements in the original plan.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) wrapped up a 48-hour public rally in northern districts, calling for the swift implementation of the Teesta Master Plan.
