UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a bilateral meeting with Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus on Friday to discuss mutual interests, including the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis. The meeting took place at the Chief Adviser's office in Tejgaon.

As part of his visit, the Chief Adviser will also tour the under-construction Cox's Bazar International Airport and the Khurushkul Climate Refugee Center.

Later, Dr. Yunus and Guterres will travel together to Cox’s Bazar, where they are scheduled to visit the Rohingya refugee camps. The two leaders will depart from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on a chartered Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at 11:15 AM.

The visit will include an Iftar gathering with Rohingya refugees, where Guterres and Dr. Yunus will share the meal, highlighting their solidarity with the displaced communities. The refugees, who have fled Myanmar, will observe Ramadan together with the two dignitaries.

Guterres emphasized the importance of international support for the Rohingya community. “Every Ramadan, I spend time with Muslim communities living in difficult circumstances to observe the fast with them and bring attention to their struggles. This year, I am in Bangladesh to express my solidarity with the Rohingya refugees and the Bangladeshi people hosting them,” he said.

In addition to his visit to the refugee camps, the UN chief will meet with local youth and civil society representatives in Dhaka on Saturday. He will also hold a joint press conference with Foreign Adviser Hossain in the afternoon.

During the visit, Guterres is expected to call on the international community to ramp up humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya refugees, highlighting their ongoing plight and the continued generosity of the Bangladeshi people in hosting them.
