UN Chief Praises Bangladesh’s Support for Rohingya Refugees

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday praised the strong cooperation between the United Nations and Bangladesh, highlighting the country’s unwavering generosity in supporting Rohingya refugees.


During a meeting with Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, Md Touhid Hossain, and the High Representative for the Chief Adviser on Rohingya Issues and Priority Affairs, Khalilur Rahman, Guterres also expressed solidarity with Bangladesh’s ongoing reform and transition process.

As part of his visit, Guterres joined Dr. Yunus in Cox’s Bazar to participate in an iftar with the Rohingya community, marking a moment of Ramadan solidarity.

The Secretary-General commended Bangladesh’s steadfast commitment to UN peacekeeping operations, recognizing its crucial role in global stability, according to a UN statement.

The meeting also saw discussions on Bangladesh’s reform and transition efforts, with Guterres acknowledging the progress made. Furthermore, Guterres and the High Representative addressed the situation in Rakhine State, Myanmar, and talked about the forthcoming High-Level Conference on Rohingya and other minority issues in Myanmar, underscoring the importance of finding long-term solutions to the crisis.
