United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres, currently on a four-day visit to Bangladesh, expressed strong support for the country’s ongoing reform and transition efforts. His remarks came during a meeting with Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Adviser, Touhid Hossain, at the Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka this morning.

The two leaders discussed the nation’s progress in its transition and reform processes, according to a readout issued by the United Nations following the meeting. "The Secretary-General expressed his full solidarity with Bangladesh’s reform and transition process," the readout stated.

Guterres also highlighted the strong partnership between the United Nations and Bangladesh, commending the country’s unwavering support for the Rohingya refugees. He acknowledged Bangladesh’s generosity in hosting over a million Rohingyas and its consistent contributions to international peacekeeping missions.

Later, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, High Representative of the Chief Advisor on Rohingya Issues, joined the discussions with the Secretary-General. They focused on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar's Rakhine state and the upcoming High-Level Conference on the Rohingya and other minority groups in Myanmar.

"The Secretary-General and the High Representative discussed the critical situation in Rakhine state and the international community's response to the crisis," the UN readout added.

In the afternoon, Guterres met with Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office. The two also planned a visit to a Rohingya refugee camp later today, where they will join a large gathering of over 100,000 Rohingyas for an iftar meal.

Throughout his visit, the UN Secretary-General is expected to call on the international community to bolster humanitarian support for the displaced Rohingya population, emphasizing the urgency of global solidarity in addressing the crisis.
