President of the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) and former Ambassador M Humayun Kabir has said that lasting peace in Gaza requires coordinated global efforts, not just unity within the Muslim world. He stressed the essential role of the international community and the United Nations in ensuring peace and justice in the war-torn region.

Speaking as the chief guest at a shadow parliament debate competition organised by Debate for Democracy, Kabir underscored the UN's responsibility as the legitimate global authority for maintaining peace and security.

"We need joint efforts involving the UN, international community, and the Muslim world. Without broader global support, Muslim unity alone cannot bring peace," he said. He described the ongoing violence in Gaza as "inhumane, barbaric, and extremely cruel."

The event, chaired by Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron, began with a minute of silence to honour those killed in recent attacks on Palestinians.

Since hostilities resumed on March 18, over 1,500 people have been killed in Gaza, adding to the more than 50,000 lives lost since October 2023—nearly a third of them children—according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The United Nations reports that at least 409 aid workers, mostly from UNRWA, have also been killed.

Chowdhury Kiron echoed the ambassador's concerns, calling the situation in Gaza a humanitarian catastrophe. "Gaza has become a city of death—no food, water, electricity, or medicine. It has turned into a mass grave," he said, decrying the ongoing violence as genocide.

Ambassador Kabir reaffirmed Bangladesh's unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their just cause.
