Bangladesh on Monday called on the Indian government to immediately hand over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both recently convicted by the International Crimes Tribunal-1.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said India is obliged to comply under the existing extradition treaty between the two countries.

Earlier in the day, the tribunal sentenced Hasina and Asaduzzaman to death for crimes against humanity committed during last year’s July–August mass uprising. The three-member panel, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder, began delivering the 453-page verdict around 12:30pm.

All three accused — including former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun — were found guilty on multiple charges.

“It would be a grave act of unfriendly conduct and a travesty of justice for any country to provide shelter to individuals convicted of crimes against humanity,” the Foreign Ministry said, urging India to return the fugitives without delay.
