Erosion by Jamuna River in Sirajganj unabated despite falling water level
Riverbank erosion along the Jamuna River continues in Sirajganj despite a slight fall in the water level, with around 40 metres of a protection embankment collapsing in the Purba Bahuka area of Sirajganj Sadar Upazila.
The collapse occurred on Saturday evening, causing concern among local residents living in erosion-prone areas.
Nazmul Hossain, Sub-Divisional Engineer (Headquarters) of the local Water Development Board (WDB), said emergency work is underway to prevent further erosion.
He said that although the water level of the Jamuna has receded slightly, erosion has continued in several areas.
He said the falling water level is creating strong currents and vortices near the riverbed, accelerating erosion, particularly in char areas. Intermittent heavy rainfall has also contributed to the situation.
Apart from Purba Bahuka, erosion has been reported in char areas of Shahjadpur, Kazipur, Belkuchi, Chauhali and Sirajganj Sadar upazilas.
Several structures, including sections of embankments, have already been swallowed by the river in recent days, reports UNB.
Sirajganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mokhlesur Rahman said erosion occurred at several points as the river water receded.
He said work to protect the affected embankment at Purba Bahuka had already begun and senior officials of the Water Development Board had visited the erosion-hit areas to assess the situation.
