Padma erosion risks 100 families to lose dwellings, cropland

Houses and cropland of over 100 families are at risk of being devoured by a tributary of the Padma River in the Sadar upazila of  Munshiganj district.

About an acre of crop field and a temple in Haldarkandi have gone under the waters in recent months, local said.

Illegal sand mining and strong current of water are blamed for the erosions.

The district administration has been accused of turning a blind eye to illegal sand mining by greedy traders.

The Water Development Board blamed excessive water flow from the upstream for the destructive erosions.

A group of traders are mining for sand taking stretches of the tributary on lease.
