2 die in Rohingya camp as heavy rains trigger landslide in Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar, July 03 - Two people including a Bangladeshi teenage boy were killed in a landslide at Rohingya camp in Ukhiya of Cox’s Bazar district on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Sifat, 13, and Anwar Islam, 27.

Shamim Hossain, officer-in-charge of Ukhiya Police Station, said a chunk of mud from a hill collapsed on the No 11 and No 8 Rohingya camp amid the torrential rainfall, leaving the two dead on the spot.

On information, a firefighting unit rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies.

The low-lying areas in Ukhiya upazila have been submerged due to heavy rains for the last couple of days, rendering many Rohingya families stranded.

Meanwhile, vehicular movement on Marine Drive road in Cox’s Bazar’s Himchori remained suspended for some time due to a landslide early Wednesday.

However, no one was injured in the landslide.-UNB
