Dengue claimed nine more lives in Bangladesh in the 24 hours to Wednesday morning, while nearly 2,000 patients were reported to have been hospitalised with the mosquito-borne disease, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The DGHS released the figures in its regular dengue bulletin on Wednesday, October 28.

With the latest fatalities, the country’s dengue death toll has reached 409 so far this year. October has recorded 164 deaths, followed by 148 in September, 43 in August, 36 in July, 13 in June and one in May. Two deaths each were reported in January and February.

The bulletin said 1,971 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country between 8am Tuesday and 8am Wednesday, bringing the total number of hospitalisations this year to 130,219.

So far, 123,605 patients have recovered and returned home.

Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of new admissions, with 816 patients. The figures for other divisions were 313 in Chattogram, 217 in Rajshahi, 214 in Khulna, 194 in Barishal, 116 in Rangpur and 84 in Mymensingh.

The latest figures highlight the continuing dengue burden across Bangladesh, particularly during October, which has recorded the highest monthly death toll so far this year.
