2 more die, 3,359 more infected as Covid surges up in BD

Bangladesh reported 12 more Covid-19 linked deaths and 3,359 more cases of infections in 24 hours till Thursday morning.

Dhaka, Jan 13 :  Bangladesh reported 12 more Covid-19 linked deaths and 3,359 more cases of infections in 24 hours till Thursday morning with the Continuous keeps escalating in the country.

With the fresh cases reported after testing 27,486 samples, the daily positivity rate kept increasing to 12.03 per cent from Wednesday’s 11.68 per cent during the 24-hour period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The country last logged 3,436 cases on September 2 last year along with 88 deaths in 24 hours while the positivity rate was 10.40 per cent.

The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 28,123 while the caseload mounted to 1,604,644 on Thursday.

Among the new deceased, six were men and six women. Eight of them were reported from Dhaka division while one each died in Chattogram, Khulna, Barishal and Mymensingh divisions.

The mortality rate declined to 1.75 per cent during the 24-hour period.

The recovery rate increased to 96.72 per cent with the recovery of 302 more patients during the 24-hour period.

Bangladesh’s total tally of Omicron cases reached 30 with detection of nine more cases on Monday, according to GISAID, a global initiative on sharing all influenza data.

On December 9 last year, Bangladesh again logged zero Covid-related death after nearly three weeks as the pandemic was apparently showing signs of easing.

The country reported this year’s first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 last year along with 178 infections since the pandemic broke out in Bangladesh in March 2020.

Bangladesh reported the highest number of daily fatalities of 264 on August 10 last year, while the highest daily caseload was 16,230 on July 28 last year.

About 43.68 per cent of the total Covid-linked deaths in the country were reported from the Dhaka division, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

DGHS spokesperson Dr Robed Amin said this at a briefing on Covid-19 on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Chattogram division has occupied the second position with 20 per cent of Covid deaths while Khulna reported 12.88 per cent deaths, Rajshahi 7.35 per cent, Barisal 3.38 per cent and Mymensingh the lowest 3.02 per cent.

Meanwhile, health authorities have designated Dhaka and Rangamati as ‘red zones’, following an exponential rise in Covid infections in the two districts.

The infection rate in Dhaka and Rangamati is 10-19 per cent, said the DGHS.

Besides, six districts, including Jashore, have been marked as ‘yellow zones’ or at "mid-level risk". The infection rate in these districts is between 5 per cent and 9 per cent, the directorate said.

On the other hand, 54 districts have been marked as 'green zones' while the sample test rates in Panchagarh and Bandarban districts are very poor, reports UNB.
