Bangladesh’s alarming week with 28456 Covid cases, 49 deaths

Dhaka, Jan 17 – The Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh has taken an alarming turn again with health authorities recording 28,456 infections along with 49 deaths linked to it during the last seven days till Monday morning. 

Since January 1, the country saw 38,478 infections and 82 deaths till Monday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).  

The surge in cases becomes more evident from the daily case positivity rate which sharply rose to 22.88 per cent on Monday from the reported 8.53 per cent on January 10.

Meanwhile, the recovery rate was showing a gradual fall as it stood at 95.62 per cent on Monday which was at 97.19 per cent just a week ago. 

During the period, the fatality rate, however, declined a bit to 1.73 per cent from 1.76 per cent, which can be considered as a matter of relief till now. 

Bangladesh reported 10 more Covid-linked deaths with 6,676 fresh cases in 24 hours till Monday. 

The fresh numbers took the country’s total fatalities to 28,154 while the caseload mounted to 1,624,387on Monday.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s total tally of Omicron cases reached 55 with the detection of 22 more cases till Monday, according to GISAID, a global initiative on sharing all influenza data.

On December 9 last year, Bangladesh again logged zero Covid-related death after nearly three weeks as the pandemic was apparently showing signs of easing.

The country reported this year’s first zero Covid-related death in a single day on November 20 last year along with 178 infections since the pandemic broke out in Bangladesh in March 2020.

Bangladesh reported the highest number of daily fatalities of 264 on August 10 last year, while the highest daily caseload was 16,230 on July 28 last year. - UNB
