Dr. Khondaker Azharul Haq Ex-president, BWP dies

Dr. Khondaker Azharul Haq, Former President of BWP, former Managing Director of Dhaka WASA and Regional Chair of GWP-South Asia expired on Saturday June 27 morning at around 10 am. Renowned water specialist and engineer Khondaker Azharul Haq, passed away on Saturday 27 June 2020 at the United Hospital Dhaka. He was Regional Chair of the South Asia Global Water Partnership and Former Managing Director Dhaka WASA. He was 75 years old and died of heart failure and other complications, says a BWP press release.
He started his career in Comilla BARD working with Akhter Hamid Khan in 1968 and later joined Bangladesh Rice Research Institute in 1974, then BARC, BADC and then went abroad with the International Irrigation Management Institute (IIMI) from 1990 to 1996, as Senior Research Scientist, both in Sudan and Sri Lanka. Returning he took over as Managing Director Dhaka WASA between 1996 to 2003. Later on, he took on various consultancy assignments with the World Bank and ADB in the water sector. In 2005, ADB honoured him by recognizing him as a “Water Champion” in Asia for his contribution to the water supply and sanitation sector, especially to the urban poor.
Dr. Haq had completed his PhD in Engineering from the University of California, MSc in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu and BSc in Agricultural Engineering from Pakistan Agricultural University, Faisalabad.
He has left behind his wife Nasreen Shampa, daughter Dr. Ishita Haq and a host of relatives, friends and well-wishers.
In a condolence message, Mr. Moshiur Rahman, President, Bangladesh Water Partnership, said, ‘I am profoundly sad and shocked to inform you that Dr. Khondaker Azharul Haq, Former President of BWP, former Managing Director of Dhaka WASA and Regional Chair of GWP-South Asia expired this morning at around 10 am “Iinnalillahe OwaInnaelaihe Rajiun”.
‘Please join me in praying for the salvation of his soul. May the Almighty Allah (SWT.) grant him a place in “Jannatul Ferdous” and give the bereaved family enough courage to bear this irreparable loss.’
