Bangladesh’s economy strengthened in July, with overall business activity expanding at a faster pace than in the previous month, according to the latest Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI).

The PMI rose by 4.9 points to 57.8 in July, up from June. A reading above 50 indicates economic expansion, while a reading below 50 signals contraction.

The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Dhaka, and Policy Exchange Bangladesh (PEB) released the PMI report on Sunday.

Three of the four major sectors covered by the index—manufacturing, agriculture and services—recorded expansion in July.

The construction sector, however, remained in contraction territory, posting a PMI reading of 49.3. Despite staying below the 50-point threshold, the sector showed significant improvement compared with June.
