BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been nominated as the party's candidate for the presidency of Bangladesh.

Following his nomination, Fakhrul resigned from his positions as the party's Secretary General and a member of the National Standing Committee, BNP said on Thursday.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the decision to reporters after a meeting of the party's National Standing Committee held at the Secretariat on Thursday afternoon.

“I’m pleased to announce that Bangladesh Nationalist Party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been nominated as the party’s candidate for president,” Rizvi said.

He said the decision was taken after a meeting with BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Rizvi said Fakhrul stepped down from his party positions immediately after being nominated as the presidential candidate.

Fakhrul also informed the nation of his decision through the media, he said.

Several members of the BNP National Standing Committee and joint secretaries general were present during the announcement.

The presidential election is scheduled to be held on 20 August. If multiple candidates remain in the race, voting will take place in Parliament.
