Poll schedule row: Left Alliance calls hartal for Thursday

The Left Democratic Alliance, a combine of six political parties, on Wednesday announced countrywide hartal from 6:00am to 2:00pm on Thursday protesting against announcement of election schedule by the Election Commission without resolving the country’s ongoing political crisis.

The leaders of the combine in a protest rally in front of the National Press Club said that most of the opposition political parties including LDA would not take part in the election under the partisan government.

They alleged that the government was going to hold a unilateral general elections in the country.

They called on the government and the Election Commission to refrain from holding such an unilateral general election and demanded holding a participatory general election under a caretaker government in free, fair and credible manner.

Chaired by coordinator of the combine and general secretary of Revolutionary Communist League, Iqbal Kabir Jahid, the rally was also adderessed by Communist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince, Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz, SPB (Marxist) coordinator Masud Rana, Samajtanrik Party executive president Abdul Ali and Democratic Revolutionary Party central leader Shahidul Islam Sabuj.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
