Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that the Election Commission (EC) will take appropriate action regarding BNP leader Ishraque Hossain’s assumption of office as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) once it officially receives the full copy of the Appellate Division's verdict.

“We have not yet received the copy of the Appellate Division’s verdict. Once we get it, we will examine the legal aspects and take steps accordingly,” the CEC told reporters on Wednesday.

He made the remarks following a meeting with other election commissioners at the EC headquarters.

Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court disposed of a Leave to Appeal with observation. The order was issued by a full bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, after hearing arguments from the lawyers representing both the petitioner and Ishraque Hossain.

The EC is expected to review the court’s observations and legal implications before taking any decision on Ishraque’s mayoral status.
