Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday called on voters to make the February 12 election day the “birthday of a new Bangladesh”, saying the nation’s future now rests in the hands of the people.

In a televised address to the nation in the evening, he said voters themselves would write the history of the country’s future through their ballots.

“Your vote will write the history of Bangladesh’s glorious future. Let this election day be the birthday of a new Bangladesh. Let us make this festive election a reality and establish it as a memorable day in history,” he said.

Urging citizens to take ownership of the country’s destiny, Prof Yunus said the power to shape Bangladesh’s future lies with the electorate.

“The key to the country is in your hands. Use that key wisely. May Allah guide us on the right path,” he said.

He stressed that casting a vote is not merely stamping a piece of paper, but a decisive choice that will shape the lives of future generations, ensure family security and determine the overall direction of the nation.

“The decisions you make today will influence education, employment, justice, democracy and every level of governance. This is the moment when your rights and responsibilities as citizens come together,” he said, urging voters to actively participate. “Cast your vote and secure your future.”

Calling for responsibility and peaceful participation, Prof Yunus said voters should go to polling stations with hope rather than fear, responsibility instead of apathy, and unity rather than division.

He emphasised that only a “free, fair and credible” election can allow the people of Bangladesh to demonstrate their ability to determine their own future.

Once the election is completed, he said, the newly elected government will promptly assume office, bringing the interim government’s responsibilities to an end.

“We will hand over power to the elected government with joy and pride, wish them every success, and return to our respective work after bidding farewell,” he said, adding that the interim government is eagerly awaiting this moment.

Prof Yunus also urged voters to attend polling stations with their families, in groups and in a festive spirit, and to exercise their right to vote freely and without hesitation.
